Gabriella Prokai

Gabriella Prokai alias LAPROKAY (born in 1973 in Hungary) lives and works as a freelance artist in Neerach near Zurich. She herself began her artistic activity as a painter in 1998.

In connection with the idiosyncratic painting and design method she developed herself, Laprokay's paintings are vital and emotional in expression. They reveal the painterly temperament as well as the artistically perfect and virtuoso handling of colours and forms. They demand concentrated attention from the viewer, but at the same time open up to multi-layered, delightful visual experiences.

Painting technique

My sketches are made directly on the canvas. I draw on the already finished, completely rough surface, which I have treated with putty and later cover with several layers of acrylic before the actual work begins. All figurative subjects are painted in oil. I use the relief-like surface to create different depths. The arbitrary deep cracks and grooves in the acrylic add dimension to the painting.

Motifs

In my first adopted country, Germany, I wanted to decorate my home with paintings. However, the paintings I liked were not affordable for me. It seemed easy to me to paint the pictures myself. But I soon found out that I couldn't paint and that I lacked skill and technique. So I decided to attend a painting course with the painter Matthias Ruf in Ludwigsburg, where I could learn colour theory and various painting techniques. My first training in structural engineering, where I learned perspective drawing and three-dimensional vision, quickly allowed me to develop my style and express it with my own techniques.
